In what way is it related to the Ferrari California then? I always thought it was a derived chassis from the Quattroporte 5th gen.

The engine block. Its internals, however, are different:

Ferrari uses a flat-plane crank with crank pins at 180*, similar to a regular 4-cylinder.

Maserati uses a cross-plane crank with pins set at 90*, similar to a regular V8.
